Toyota Motor Corp. intends to hike production of Tacoma midsize pickup trucks at its kit assembly plant in Mexico, Automotive News reports.
The company's Baja factory raised annual capacity from 60,000 to 68,000 last year and plans to boost output to 89,000 units in April. The latest expansion will be achieved by adding a third shift.
AN notes that Tacoma sales in the U.S. are down 7% this year. But the Mexico facility's output will grow as it absorbs some Tacoma production currently occurring at Toyota's truck plant in Texas, which also makes the strong-selling Tundra fullsize pickup.
