Toyota Motor Corp. has temporarily suspended U.S. tests on public roads of its autonomous-driving systems following a fatal crash on Sunday between a pedestrian and a robotic Uber car in Arizona.
Toyota says it halted the tests for the sake of the emotional well-being of its test drivers. Toyota will continue testing on closed circuits in the U.S. and on public roads in Japan.
Ford and General Motors say their test programs, which include public roads, will continue unchanged. Other carmakers have not commented about possible changes in their policies, but no carmaker has questioned its confidence in the underlying technology.
