Toyota Predicts Fuel-Cell Cars at EV Prices by 2030

Toyota Motor Corp.'s top R&D executive tells Automotive News Europe that fuel cells will drop in price by the end of the next decade enough to compete with battery-electric powertrains.
The company anticipates it will be able to sell 5,000-10,000 of the fuel-cell vehicle it introduces in 2015. The car, expected to be priced at about $99,000, will be based on the FCV Concept vehicle Toyota unveiled at the Tokyo auto show last month.
The company tells ANE the fuel-cell powertrain in the 2015 car will cost roughly $49,000. That compares with about $1 million for the first such system it built in 2007.
Toyota believes it can cut the system cost to about $10,000 by 2020 by simplifying and shrinking the design, borrowing some components from combustion engines, reducing the need for platinum and trimming the amount of material required to make the vehicle's high-pressure hydrogen storage tank.
