Toyota Motor Corp. plans to invest $22 million over the next four years to support a previously announced research and development center it's opening this summer in Ann Arbor, Mich., in conjunction with the University of Michigan.

The facility, which is part of the carmaker’s one-year-old Toyota Research Institute (TRI), will develop artificial intelligence, autonomous driving and robotics technologies. TRI also has r&d centers in Palo Alto, Calif., and Cambridge, Mass., in partnership with Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, respectively.

Under the new program, TRI will collaborate with U-M’s research faculty and students to develop “intelligent” technologies. U-M professors will submit proposals to be funded by the program, which will focus on enhanced driving safety, robotics, advanced mobility, autonomous driving and student learning.

The institute says one key goal will be to apply emerging mobility technologies to in-home support of the elderly and those with special needs.
