Toyota Motor Corp.'s robotics unit has developed a medical device to help people with lower limb paralysis relearn how to walk.
Described as an "active extension and rotation movement” system, the Welwalk WW-1000 adds support cables and robotic extensions to a treadmill-like base. The device guides and assists users during the rehabilitation process.
Based on patient movement and “gait characteristic” analysis, the WW-1000 uses artificial intelligence to create its own algorithms to create an optimized exercise program for each user. Patients and doctors use large touchscreens to control the device and provide feedback.
Toyota expects the WW-1000 to help stroke victims and people recovering from severe accidents. The device will be available to rent in Japanese hospitals this autumn.
