Toyota Motor Corp. says it aims to introduce a next-generation taxi for the Japanese market in 2017.
The carmaker, which supplies most taxis in Japan, has partnered on the project with the Japan Federation of Hire-Taxi Assns. Toyota says the new vehicle is being designed to be especially accessible to families with children, foreign tourists and the elderly.
Toyota wants to push the use of new technologies, including self-driving capabilities, with the new model. The partners will evaluate enhanced safety, common design principles, new rider convenience features and multi-lingual services.
The federation and its 15,000 operators oppose unlicensed ride-hailing services such as Uber. But Toyota says the alliance will evaluate new business models, including those that tap the capabilities of automated vehicles. The partners also will study road traffic in Tokyo and test new business approaches that tap the capabilities of automated driving.
