Toyota Motor Corp. and partner China FAW Group Corp. have begun construction of a $207 million product development and test facility in Tianjin, China.

The 1.2 million-sq.-ft. center, which is expected to open in 2015, will house R&D activities for Toyota and FAW. The two companies also operate a large joint venture assembly plant in Tianjin that makes the RAV4 crossover vehicle and Corolla, Crown, Reiz and Vios cars.

Toyota says the facility will house design and vehicle body development labs for vehicles intended for the Chinese market, including those marketed under the Toyota-FAW venture's new Ranz brand.
