Toyoda Gosei Co. says its all-plastic turbocharger duct is half the weight of current multi-material designs. The first application for the lightweight unit is on Toyota Motor Corp.’s HiAce commercial van.

Turbo ducts typically use a mix of metal, rubber and plastic to ensure high pressure and heat resistance. Such designs also absorb engine vibration.

Toyoda Gosei says it was able to meet performance requirements through the use of a soft plastic, bellows and other design modifications.

Suction blow-molding was used to form the part’s complex shape.
