Hyundai Motor Co. says its president of R&D and two executives in charge of engineering and electronics development have resigned "to take responsibility for a series of quality issues," Reuters reports.

The R&D chief, Kwon Moon-sik, had been in the job for about one year. Hyundai has not yet announced his replacement.

The company says the departures underscore its "commitment to quality management" and "R&D competitiveness."

In September Hyundai and its Kia Motors affiliate recalled more than 2.6 million vehicles worldwide to replace faulty brake switches. If the switch fails, the brake lights to stop working and the driver cannot disengage the cruise control system by tapping on the brake pedal.

Hyundai Chairman Chung Mong-koo, a son of the company's founder, is credited with Hyundai's soaring quality scores in recent years. Reuters notes that he also has a reputation for abruptly firing executives who displease him.
