Denso Corp. has unveiled a diesel fuel injector equipped with a sensor to improve performance.

The sensor determines air pressure and combustion temperature, feeding the data to a computer that adjusts fuel injection timing and quantity.

Denso says the system is accurate to 0.00001 second, and its precision could reduce engine noise, diminish emissions and improve fuel economy by 2%-5%. Toyota Motor Corp. plans to use the new injector design, and Denso says it will promote the technology to other carmakers.

The new electronic injector extends the i-ART (intelligent-accuracy refinement technology) system Denso introduced last year that fits each diesel injector with a fuel pressure sensor. The company says i-ART can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 2%.
