Chris Lattner, the veteran Apple Inc. software executive hired in January to head software development for Tesla Inc.’s semi-autonomous Autopilot feature, has left the company.
Lattner and the company agree he wasn’t a good fit for Tesla. His successor is Andrej Karpathy, a former research scientist at OpenAI. As Tesla’s new director of artificial intelligence and Tesla Vision, Karpathy will report to CEO Elon Musk.
Overall development of the Autopilot system, which enables a car to drive itself for short periods under certain conditions, is now headed by Jim Keller, according to the company.
