Tesla Motors Inc. is expanding its battery “gigafactory” outside Reno, Nev., to also make motors and gearboxes for its upcoming Model 3 electric sedan.
The $350 million project was revealed on Tuesday by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. The battery plant began mass producing lithium-ion cells for Tesla EVs earlier this month. The company assembles cars at its factory in Fremont, Calif., where Model 3 production is expected to begin at the end of 2017.
The Nevada facility, which also makes Powerwall 2 stationary backup battery systems, targets annual output of cells representing 35 gigawatts of power by 2018. The plant aims to produce enough cells to power 500,000 EVs per year by the time the $5 billion complex is completed in 2020.
