Tesla Motors Inc. is pilot-testing technology it says eventually will be able to swap the battery pack in one of the company's Model S electric sedans in less than one minute.
The technology currently can complete the switch in about three minutes, according to the company. Tesla says its invitational pilot test in Harris Ranch, Calif., aims to assess relative demand for fast battery swaps that cost about $50 compared with free half-hour charging at one of the company's Supercharger facilities.
Tesla initially is offering battery swaps on an appointment basis. The pilot test will help the company decide whether to invest in automated equipment and vehicle modifications to streamline the swap process.
