Electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors Inc. says its assembly facility in Fremont, Calif., has reached its full production rate of 20,000 cars per year.
Increased output has trimmed the waiting time for the $57,400 Model S sedan to four to six months from as much as a year previously, according to Tesla. The company has said the higher sales volume will enable it to become profitable this year for the first time.
Tesla began building the Model S at a former General Motors-Toyota joint venture plant last spring. The company says it remains on track to add production of the new Model X seven-passenger crossover vehicle in mid-2014.
