Beleaguered airbag supplier Takata Corp. is demanding tighter quality control for its 100-company supply base, Reuters reports.
Takata's exploding airbag inflators have been linked to five deaths and triggered roughly 13 million recalls by 10 carmakers over the past six years. No one has precisely identified the cause of the problem, making it difficult to define the size and scope of the recalls.
One Reuters source says Takata aims to inspect 40 suppliers by year-end and the remainder in 2015. The company operates 55 factories in 20 countries, including only one in Japan that makes complete airbag systems.
