Airbag supplier Takata Corp. has added Hiroshi Shimizu, the company's top quality assurance executive, to its board of directors.
Shimizu represented Takata in two Congressional committee hearings last year about the company's handling of recalls involving its airbag inflators that could explode. Last month the supplier said carmakers should replace about 34 million of its devices in vehicles in the U.S. alone. The exact cause of the defect remains unclear.
Shimizu took over as head of Takata quality assurance in 2013. That was when the company appointed Stefan Stocker, a former president of Robert Bosch GmbH's Japan unit, as its president. Stocker stepped down as president last December and will leave the Takata board this month.
