Prosecutors in Sweden have begun a probe into possible fraud by Volkswagen AG triggered by the carmaker’s sale of diesel-powered vehicles equipped to evade government emission tests.
Investigators vow to look into all aspects of some 225,000 affected cars sold in Sweden over the past six years. The vehicles are among 8.5 million rigged cars VW says it delivered across Europe.
Sweden has filed no charges to date. But the Journal says officials are looking into possible gross fraud and false use of documents. Penalties against individuals for such wrongdoing carry maximum penalties of as much as six years in prison. If VW representatives are found guilty, the company could be fined as much as 10 million kronor ($1.2 million).
