Suzuki Motor Corp. is preparing to debut a 2-cylinder, 800-cc diesel in India. The company did not indicate a launch date.
The new diesel is the first developed entirely in-house by Suzuki. The company's other diesels are based on technologies licensed from other carmakers.
The lightweight turbocharged engine makes 47 hp and 92 lb-ft of torque. The tiny powerplant will be offered as an option in the Celerio minicar sold by affiliate Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. The diesel-powered five-door hatch has been rated at 27.6 km per liter (65 mpg), reportedly making it the most fuel-efficient car in the Indian market.
Suzuki says it tamed the inherent noise and vibration of a 2-cylinder diesel by optimizing the flywheel and engine mounts, adjusting body rigidity and adding noise absorption materials.
The engine features an aluminum cylinder block and a compact fuel distribution system. Suzuki says it enhanced fuel efficiency by combining a relatively low 15:1 compression ratio with a large intercooler.
