UPDATE: Steering Parts Shortage Disrupts BMW Production
A shortage of steering systems components has affected production at BMW AG assembly plants on three continents.
A shortage of steering systems components from Robert Bosch GmbH has affected production at BMW AG assembly plants on three continents.
The disruptions, caused by an unidentified sub-tier Italian supplier, began last week in Leipzig and Munich, according to Germany’s Focus magazine. Plants in Shenyang, China, and Rosslyn, South Africa, each is expected to suspend production on Monday for at least a day.
Bosch says its supplier has been unable to produce enough casings for an electronic steering system. BMW says it will seek compensation from its supplier.
BMW tells Bloomberg the shortages are affecting its output of 1, 2, 3 and 4 Series small and midsize cars. It says a task force is trying to resolve the issue and will help determine whether additional production halts will be necessary.
