Sono Motors GmbH plans to offer test drives in its Sion electric car next year and launch sales in 2018.
The Munich-based startup, which began engineering development in 2012, showed a prototype of the tiny car earlier this year. The company, which raised more than $200,000 in crowdsourcing funds in recent months, is targeting sales in Europe, India, North America and Australia.
Two versions of the Sion six-seater are planned. The base “Urban” model has a 14-kWh battery and an estimated driving range of 75 miles, while the up-level Sion Extender features a 30-kWh battery and a 155-mile range. Both models are covered in 80 sq ft of photovoltaic solar panels, which Sono claims can provide as much as an additional 18 miles of range per day.
Buyers will have the option of leasing batteries that can be swapped out every month. Interior highlights include a 10-inch infotainment screen and a special air filtration system.
