BMW AG says it will launch a new flagship electric vehicle with autonomous driving capabilities for its “i” sub-brand in 2021.
Codenamed iNext, the all-new EV is part of the carmaker’s "Number One Next" strategy. The vehicle will team a variety of automated driver-assist features with a more efficient electric powertrain, digital connectivity, a redesigned interior and a lightweight architecture, according to BMW.
Speaking at BMW’s annual shareholders’ meeting today in Munich, CEO Harald Krueger described the new car as the company's “innovation driver.” No other details were provided, although the vehicle is expected to be a production version of the Vision Next concept BMW presented in March.
Since launching the brand in 2013, BMW has sold some 50,000 i3 EV and i8 plug-in hybrid vehicles. A new i8 Roadster is due to launch in 2018.
Other new “green” vehicles in the pipeline include plug-in hybrid variants of BMW’s next-generation 2 and 7 Series cars and X5 crossover vehicle.
