Apple Inc. and Google Inc. both are shopping for space in the San Francisco area for the development of autonomous cars, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Google is targeting as much as 400,000 sq ft of space and Apple is looking for something twice as large, the newspaper says, citing an analysts teleconference with Victor Coleman, who heads Hudson Pacific Properties Inc. Apple and Google declined to comment.
Coleman adds that land for autonomous vehicle testing near Silicon Valley is in “hot demand.” In addition to the two tech giants, he says several carmakers are looking to expand their California presence.
BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and Toyota are among companies that have recently set up Silicon Valley operations or are planning to do so in the near future, Coleman notes.
