Construction has begun for a new R&D center and providing ground in Liuzhou, China, for SAIC-GM Wuling Automobile Co. Ltd.
The company aims to open the 211-acre proving ground in December 2016. The 93-acre product development center will open two years later. The cost of the dual projects was not announced.
The R&D center will be constructed in four phases. A noise, vibration and harshness lab and environmental simulation lab will come first. It will be followed with test facilities for parts and materials. The third phase will install equipment to evaluate engines, new-energy vehicles and emission and safety systems. The final phase will build a modeling center and add capacity to test complete vehicles.
SAIC-GM-Wuling is 50.1% owned by SAIC, 44% by GM and 5.9% by Wuling. The company makes commercial vehicles and Baojun brand cars. Last year the venture reported record sales of 1.6 million vehicles.
