BMW AG’s Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unit has begun testing its new aluminum spaceframe architecture with mule vehicles on public roads. The platform, which was announced last March, will underpin all future Rolls models starting in 2018.
Initial testing will assess the architecture’s performance on a variety of surfaces and in extreme conditions to ensure ride and drive characteristics meet the ultra-luxury brand’s standards.
The first vehicle to be fitted on the aluminum platform, which will be exclusive to Rolls-Royce, is expected to be the next-generation Phantom flagship sedan. A new crossover/SUV—a first for Rolls-Royce—also is in the works.
