Toyota Motor Corp. plans to begin assembling batteries for hybrids and all-electric cars in Thailand in early 2020, sources tell the Kyodo news service.

The carmaker will import key battery parts and assemble them together will locally produced parts. The company is setting up a production facility near its auto plant in Chachoengsao, which is 85 km west of Bangkok.

Kyodo offers few specifics about the plan and no details about targeted production volume, battery storage capacity or models that will use the batteries.

Toyota has said it hopes to sell 4.5 million electrified vehicles per year worldwide by 2030. Local assembly of the heavy batteries used to power such models helps lower vehicle cost.
