Germany’s motor vehicle authority is investigating whether Daimler AG used illegal software in some of its SUVs to rig European emission tests, according to Bild am Sonntag.
The German newspaper says KBA is examining “suspicious” engine control software used in about 60,000 of the company’s 2012-2015 model Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 diesels. The software is suspected of lowering emissions to meet European standards only when the vehicle is being tested.
Bild says Daimler removed the software in 2017 when it agreed to update emission control software in 3 million diesels to lower their real-world output of oxides of nitrogen emissions. Daimler denies any deliberate wrongdoing. The company tells Reuters it is cooperating with KBA’s investigation.
