Google Inc. is evaluating locations in suburban Detroit—including Ann Arbor, Farmington Hills, Southfield and Troy—to set up a new research and development center for autonomous vehicles.
The California-based Internet giant is looking for at least 30,000 sq ft of additional space in Michigan, reports Crain's Detroit Business, which cites unnamed sources. It notes that Google already is leasing 90,000 sq ft of office space in Farmington Hills and plans to open another facility in Ann Arbor later this year.
Google has said it wants to partner with a carmaker to produce autonomous vehicles. But a recent report indicated the company also is running recruiting advertisements for engineers, manufacturing experts and a project manager in Michigan for its self-driving vehicle program.
