The German government is likely to announce on Monday that it will double the size of a planned fund for urban transport infrastructure to €1 billion, according to two newspapers in Stuttgart.
The reports say Chancellor Angela Merkel will reveal the plan when she meets with government representatives from German towns most affected by pollution from diesel engines. The proposed fund would be used to install charging stations for electric vehicles and help cities switch to electric transit buses.
Merkel has been accused by critics for being overly supportive of Germany’s auto industry, which is scrambling to polish an image tarnished by the emission levels of its diesels. She has been campaigning for reelection with a get-tough stance that is pushing carmakers to do more to clean up Germany’s urban air.
