Ford Motor Co. is moving forward with plans for an all-new compact pickup truck.
The carmaker began engineering and design work on the vehicle this summer and plans to test prototypes of the vehicle next year, sources tell FordAuthority. The vehicle is expected to bow in 2021, but it isn’t clear where it will be sold.
Reports from this summer indicated the new model will be built on the next-generation Focus small car platform with a transversally mounted engine. Availability in the U.S. will depend in part on where the vehicle is built and the outcome of trade agreements being negotiated by the Trump administration.
Several names are being considered. The frontrunner is thought to be Courier, which was last used in South America on a Fiesta-based subcompact pickup (pictured) that was discontinued in 2013. That nameplate was last used in the U.S. in the early 1980s on a Mazda B-Series-based truck positioned below the F-100.
