Daimler AG could be ordered to recall more than 600,000 of its diesel-powered midsize cars and SUVs because of suspected illegal emission controls, according to Der Spiegel, which cites no sources.

The weekly news magazine claims Germany’s KBA vehicle authority believes affected vehicles use so-called “defeat device” software that allows emission level well above regulatory limits. KBA is looking specifically at C-Class cars and G-Class SUVs.

Daimler, which has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, tells Reuters it has not been summoned by KBA. Yesterday the agency ordered Daimler to recall Vito vans equipped with 1.6-iter diesels it says are fitted with illegal emission controls. The company has vowed to appeal the directive.
