CEO Carlos Ghosn says Renault SA is willing to turn over the software coding used by its diesels to control emissions as proof the company isn’t cheating on pollution tests.
French authorities said earlier this month that their 10-month investigation into possible emission test fraud by several carmakers failed to rule out the possible use of illegal software. Critics have urged the investigators to address their remaining doubts by examining any suspicious software.
Renault has repeatedly denied using any mechanisms to bypass emission rules. But the company also has agreed to tighten the performance of its emission control systems in the future. Environmentalists say loopholes in European emission test procedures have allowed carmakers too much leeway in how their pollution control systems function during regulatory tests.
