The Renault-Nissan alliance will spend 170 billion won (€120 million) to prepare a South Korean assembly plant run by Renault's Korean unit to begin producing 80,000 Nissan vehicles per year in 2014.
The Busan factory will make the next-generation Rogue crossover vehicle, mainly for the U.S. market, where demand for the model is strong.
The alliance partners say the plan will help Renault Samsung Motors, boost its efficiency. The Busan factory has annual capacity of 300,000 units but built only 73,800 vehicles in the first half of this year.
The move also will enable Nissan to take advantage of Korea's favorable exchange rates and the country's free trade agreements with the U.S. and the European Union.
