The Renault-Nissan alliance is partnering with Africa's Stallion Group to assemble Nissan and Renault vehicles in Nigeria next year.
The alliance has signed a preliminary agreement in which Stallion will expand its existing commercial vehicle factory in Lagos to make 45,000 vehicles annually. The plant is expected to begin with the Nissan Patrol two-door small SUV and add unspecified Renault models later. The partners say the facility eventually will make cars, vans and pickup and light-duty trucks.
Nissan, which describes Nigeria as a future "significant manufacturing hub" in Africa, hopes to double its sales on the continent to about 220,000 units by 2016.
Earlier this week the alliance completed a €400 million expansion of its factory in Tangier, Morocco. The project added a second production line, which will hike the facility's annual capacity next year to 340,000 units and make it the largest auto plant in Africa.
