Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says the top-rated version of its 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty pickup truck with a 6.7-liter diesel inline-six engine will generate a class-leading 930 lb-ft of torque, up 30 lb-ft over the outgoing model.

The increase allows the Ram to leapfrog General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet 3500 HD and Ford Motor Co.’s F-Series Super Duty diesel V-8 pickups. The latter’s 6.7-liter mill generates 925 lb-ft. of grunt, while the Chevy 3500’s 6.6-liter oil burner is rated at 910 lb-ft.

The 385-hp output of Ram’s carryover straight-six diesel remains unchanged. The additional torque is attributed to enhancements made to the engine’s variable geometry turbocharger and fuel delivery system.

The updated diesel, which continues to be mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission, lets the Ram 3500 tow 30,000 lbs when it's equipped with a special fifth-wheel hitch. The $1,400 option was designed specifically for the 3500, according to Ram. A gooseneck hitch raises the towing capacity to 31,210 lbs, while a conventional hitch can tow 20,000 lbs.

The 2018 model is due in dealerships later this month. Pricing hasn't been announced.
