PSA Group says it will eliminate another 250 jobs at its Vauxhall assembly plant in Ellesmere Port, England.
The French carmaker says a plan last October to drop one of two shifts and trim 400 jobs through a voluntary retirement program was successful but insufficient to achieve its cost reduction target. The factory had been operating at about 63% of capacity, Reuters reports.
When PSA acquired Opel/Vauxhall from General Motors Co. last year, the company vowed to honor Ellesmere Port’s labor pacts and production plans. Those commitments will expire when the next-generation Astra model launches in 2021.
PSA has repeatedly warned that all of Opel’s facilities must quickly become significantly more efficient to survive. Analysts predict PSA will shut down at least one plant, and many consider Ellesmere a likely candidate as the company consolidates future model production at its French plants.
