PSA Peugeot Citroen is preparing plans for a new plant in Morocco to make low-priced vehicles for the African market, sources tell Bloomberg News.
They say PSA may announce the project in June. Initial annual capacity is expected to be less that 100,000 units.
PSA currently assembles Peugeot 301 small sedans in Nigeria with local partner PAN Nigeria Ltd. The Moroccan facility would be the French company's first wholly owned factory on the African continent.
Bloomberg notes that PSA sales in Africa and the Middle East fell 25% to 169,400 units in 2014. The region currently generates about 6% of the company's global sales.
