Porsche AG has acquired southern Italy's famed Nardo proving ground from auto testing firm Prototipo SpA.
The 700-hectare facility includes a 6.3-km handling circuit and routes for on- and off-road commercial vehicles. Cars using the 12.6-km high-speed banked circle have achieved speeds as high as 354 km/hr. The proving ground also has an emission lab, noise track and facilities to simulate varying road surfaces and weather conditions.
Prototipo has used the Nardo facility, which was built by Fiat SpA in 1975, to handle most of Fiat's road-testing activities since the late 1990s.
The Nardo facility will be run by the Porsche Engineering Group subsidiary, which also operates the Porsche Development Center near Stuttgart, Germany. Weather at the Italian track, which is milder than at its German facility, will allow Porsche to conduct year-round testing.
