Porsche AG says it has begun road testing prototypes of its plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder supercar. The $995,000 two-seater is expected to go into production by late September 2013.

Porsche unveiled the 918 Spyder in prototype form at the Geneva auto show two years ago. The car will be powered by a 770-hp powertrain that includes a 4.6-liter V-8 engine and two electric motors one for the front wheels and one for the rears.

Porsche expects the hybrid powertrain to deliver fuel economy of about 78 mpg on the European test cycle.

The mid-engine 918 Spyder will feature a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque, adaptive aerodynamics, rear-axle steering and an exhaust system that vents through the top of the bodywork.
