General Motors Co.'s Opel unit says it will eliminate one of three shifts at its assembly plant in Eisenach, Germany, because of slowing sales.

Opel is talking to its unions about halting the night shift at the facility, which makes the Opel Corsa supermini. The company already has reduced work hours for about half its 1,600 employees in Eisenach.

Opel suggests it may not need to lay off night-shift workers because the factory will add production of the Adam city car, which is due next year.
