Opel Debuts New 4-Cylinder Diesel Family

General Motors Co.'s Opel unit has introduced a new family of 1.6-liter turbodiesel engines that will replace the company's 1.7-liter lineup and some of its 2.0-liter diesels.
The aluminum-block engines are the first from Opel to meet Euro 6 emission standards. The company plans to offer a range of power levels, beginning with a 136-hp unit that delivers 236 lb-ft of torque and is 10% more fuel efficient than a 2.0-liter with similar power.
The new diesel shares the Ecotec brand introduced last year for Opel's new line of 1.6-liter gasoline engines that goes into production next spring. Both engine families, which were developed in-house, will be built at the company's factory in Szentgotthard, Hungary.
