Germany’s KBA transport authority has cleared Opel AG of wrongdoing in equipping its Cascade convertibles, Insignia sedans and Zafira minivans with 2.0-liter diesels that shut off their emission controls under certain operating conditions, Bild am Sonntag reports.
European regulations allow such shutoffs to protect the engine. But critics, including Germany’s transport ministry, say many carmakers have abused the allowance. Opel has insisted its system is legal, and KBA agreed.
The transport ministry raised questions in May about the justification for the Opel shutoff and ordered the company to provide technical details about the system.
