Nissan Motor Co. intends next year to offer U.S. owners of its Leaf electric car a monthly payment plan that would allow them to replace their vehicle's original battery whenever they wish.
Leaf batteries are already covered by a five-year, 60,000-mile warranty that provides free replacement if the battery's capacity drops below about 70%.
Under the new plan, owners could replace their batteries sooner or switch to more powerful units as they become available at a cost of about $100 per month. Nissan offers a similar program for Leaf owners in Europe.
All Leaf vehicles are eligible for the program, which the company expects to launch in the first half of 2014. Nissan says it will reveal further details later this year.
