Nissan Motor Co. has formally opened a 1 billion-baht ($29 million) research and test center in Thailand.
The 6,600-sqare meter (71,000 sq-ft) facility in Samut Prakan will employ 330 people by year-end, including technicians trained in Japan.
The center’s mission will be to support models Nissan makes in seven assembly plants in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. A key objective will be to help Nissan expand its regional network of parts suppliers by helping to develop and test locally sourced components.
Among the facility’s testing tools are an acoustic chamber, anechoic chamber, vibration simulator, environment chamber and dynamometers.
Nissan operates 13 r&d facilities in Europe, China, southeast Asia and the U.S.
