Nissan Motor Co. plans to invest about 30 billion yen ($377 million) to erect a new assembly plant in Thailand to eventually double its production in the country to 400,000 units, The Nikkei reports.
The Tokyo-based newspaper, which doesn't cite its sources, says the factory will open in 2014 near Nissan's manufacturing complex outside Bangkok.
That facility has been running at full capacity of 200,000 cars and trucks per year. The new factory would have initial annual capacity of 100,000 cars and commercial trucks, which would eventually double.
Nissan is looking to Thailand to help diversify its sales and production base in Asia, which is heavily reliant on Japan and China, The Nikkei states. The strong yen has made it expensive to make cars in Japan. China's cooling economic growth and heightened anti-Japan sentiment have hurt Nissan sales there.
