Nissan Motor Co. says its third assembly plant in Mexico will boost the company's capacity there to 1 million units by the end of 2016.
The $2 billion factory in Aguascalientes, which opened this week, has capacity to make 175,000 cars per year. It will produce Sentra sedans initially, but CEO Carlos Ghosn tells Bloomberg Television the facility was designed to produce as many as four different models on each assembly line.
Nissan is already Mexico's largest carmaker with a 25% share of the domestic market and 24% of the country's total automotive output.
Nissan operates a second plant in Aguascalientes and has a third facility in Cuernavaca. About 70% of its combined output in Mexico is exported to markets in North and South America.
