Nissan Motor Co. has asked the local government for permission to add about 2,300 sq meters (25,000 sq ft) of floorspace to its huge assembly plant in Sunderland, England, Reuters reports.
The expansion is part of a previously announced 250 million ($390 million) plan to add 60,000 units capacity at the complex. The 27-year-old facility, which currently produces more than 500,000 vehicles per year, is the U.K.'s largest car assembly plant.
Nissan says the additional space will be used to expand press, body, paint and trim operations. The company intends to begin producing a new compact Infiniti sedan at Sunderland in 2015 after cancelling plants to have the model assembled in Austria by contractor Magna Steyr.
The Sunderland complex sits on a 202-hectare (500-acre) site, but only 30 hectares (75 acres) have been developed to date, according to Reuters. The plant currently covers 350,000 sq meters (nearly 3.8 million sq ft).
