Nissan Motor Co. refutes allegations by the United Auto Workers union that employees at its Canton, Miss., assembly plant were told the facility will close if they vote to unionize.

Nissan notes that it boosted its workforce in Canton by about 25% to 5,000 employees last year. The company also is doubling the number of models produced there, which will bring the total to eight car, SUV, van and pickup truck nameplates by 2014.

Nissan has previously denied UAW charges that it is interfering with unionizing efforts.

UAW President Bob King tells Bloomberg News that he is appealing to Nissan's top management in Japan to "correct the violations of worker rights" in Canton. UAW supporters note that the company hasn't blocked its workers in Brazil, Japan and South Africa from unionizing.
