Nexteer Touts Electric Power Steering, Steer-by-Wire for Self-Driving Cars
Nexteer Automotive Group Ltd. is introducing new electric power steering (EPS) and steer-by-wire systems tailored for autonomous vehicles.
Nexteer Automotive Group Ltd. is introducing new electric power steering (EPS) and steer-by-wire systems this week at the Frankfurt auto show.
The Saginaw, Mich.-based company says both technologies are designed to support Level 2-5 automated driving. The new EPS provides safety redundancies needed for self-driving cars through additional torque and position sensors, electronic control units, winding motors and dual sets of vehicle power and communication connectors.
EPS also provides the basis for cost-effective steer-by-wire (SbW) systems, according to Nexteer. SbW, in turn, can enable collision avoidance and other advanced safety features, including integrating steering and braking aids.
Earlier this year Nexteer formed a 50:50 joint venture with Continental AG to develop control and actuator systems for self-driving cars. The partnership combines Nexteer's steering and driver assistance technologies with Continental's automated driving and braking technologies.
