Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit is road-testing prototypes of the next-generation GLE midsize crossover vehicle due within the next three years.
Spy shots of the camouflaged car indicate the all-new vehicle will be longer, lower and sleeker than the current GLE. Other changes include a redesigned rear-end and wider wheel arches.
Power is expected to come from a new line of turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engines.
The fourth-generation GLE will ride on the carmaker’s new Modular High Architecture (MHA). The MHA chassis will carry most of Mercedes’ future crossovers and SUVs as the company continues to reduce the number of platforms it uses from nine a few years ago to four.
Mercedes adopted the GLE moniker with last year’s freshening of the the midsize crossover. The vehicle previously had been sold under the M-Class banner.
