Ford Motor Co.’s upcoming “Mustang-inspired” all-electric crossover vehicle may be offered with multiple motor and battery variants.

Ford, which announced plans for the EV in early 2018, aims to introduce the model in late 2020. Previous reports have suggested the SUV will feature two electric motors teamed with a high-capacity battery to enable all-wheel drive and a 300-mile range.

But a press release from Electrify America says the vehicle will have an “extended battery” and rear-wheel drive. The EV charging service, which was established by Volkswagen AG in 2017 as part of the carmaker’s diesel emission scandal settlement, has since deleted these references.

Ford and Electrify America confirm Ford’s previous assertion that the new EV will boast a 300-mile driving range. Eliminating one motor would sacrifice power but also cut weight and help achieve such a range. A rwd bias also would mimic the handling attributes of the Mustang pony car.

The companies have said the electric crossover’s battery would have a 150-kW charging capability. Electrify America’s fast-charging systems will be capable of adding 47 miles of range in 10 minutes, according to the partners.

Ford, which announced plans for the EV in early 2018, aims to introduce the vehicle in late 2020. Last week Ford announced various charging options for future EVs, including a partnership with Electrify America.
